Mercury V10 425 and V12 600 Verado outboard engines comparison

Mercury V10 425HP vs V12 600HP: Which Engine Is Right for Your Boat?

June 08, 20264 min read

Mercury has always pushed the limits of outboard performance, and the Verado family sits at the top of that effort. The V12 600HP redefined what an outboard could be when it launched in 2021. Now, the all-new V10 425HP has raised the bar again in the high-horsepower segment. Two engines, same premium Verado bloodline, very different purposes. If you are trying to decide which one belongs on your next boat, here is what you need to know.

Meet the V10 425: Mercury's New Performance Standard

The V10 425 is the newest addition to the Verado lineup, announced in July 2025. It is built on Mercury's proven 5.7-liter V10 platform, the same foundation as the V10 350 and V10 400, but tuned for a new level of performance through updated software calibration and hardware changes including a larger throttle body.

The numbers back it up. In Mercury's own testing against a competitor's 450hp outboard on a loaded 26-foot center console, the 425 pulled ahead by three seconds from zero to 30 mph. It is also 15 percent quicker from zero to 50 mph than Mercury's previous 350hp model. That is real-world acceleration you feel the moment you push the throttle.

At 26-inch center-to-center mounting, it is also an ideal repower candidate for any boat originally rigged with L6 Verado outboards or competing brands. If your current engines are aging and you want a meaningful performance upgrade without a full rigging overhaul, the 425 is worth a serious look.

Other highlights:

  • 5.7-liter V10 displacement

  • 150-amp alternator, highest output in its class

  • Digital Throttle and Shift standard

  • Available Joystick Piloting

Best suited for: center consoles, sportfish boats, and performance builds in the 25 to 38-foot range running twin or triple configurations.

Meet the V12 600: The Most Powerful Outboard Ever Built

The V12 600HP is in a category of its own. When Mercury introduced it in 2021, it became the world's first V12 outboard engine and it brought with it a list of firsts that no other manufacturer has matched since.

The engine is built around a purpose-designed 7.6-liter V12 block that Mercury engineered from scratch, not adapted from an automotive platform. That gave their engineers full control over every dimension of the powerhead for marine use.

What makes the V12 600 genuinely different from every other outboard on the market:

Steerable gearcase: The upper engine stays fixed while only the lower gearcase turns to steer the boat. The result is sharper handling response and dramatically simplified multi-engine rigging with 27-inch center-to-center mounting.

Two-speed automatic transmission: An industry first. First gear delivers maximum torque and hole shot. Second gear shifts silently for efficient cruising and top-end speed. You barely notice the shift.

Contra-rotating dual propellers: Two props spinning in opposite directions on the same shaft, which cancels torque and improves efficiency and control.

Whisper-quiet operation: Despite producing 600 horsepower, noise and vibration levels are comparable to Mercury's V8 300hp Verado. On a big offshore boat running quad engines, that matters enormously.

Fuel efficiency: Twin V12 600s on a 43-foot day boat delivered 20 percent better fuel economy at cruise than triple competitor 425hp outboards. Less engines, more range, lower fuel bills.

Key specs:

  • 7.6-liter V12 displacement

  • 600 horsepower

  • 1,260 lbs dry weight

  • Runs on 87-octane regular fuel

  • 200-hour service intervals

Best suited for: large center consoles, luxury offshore builds, sportfishermen, and premium vessels in the 40-foot-plus range, particularly those running twin, triple, or quad configurations.

So Which One Is Right for You?

The answer comes down to three things: boat size, intended use, and budget.

Choose the V10 425 if: Your boat is in the 25 to 38-foot range, you want maximum acceleration and performance from a proven V10 platform, you are repowering an existing boat originally rigged with L6 Verados or a competing brand, or you want the most capable engine in its class without stepping into the complexity and cost of the V12 platform.

Choose the V12 600 if: Your boat is 40 feet or larger and carries serious weight, you are building or repowering a premium offshore vessel that demands the absolute best in power, efficiency, and ride quality, you want the quietest and smoothest high-horsepower outboard on the water, or you are running quad engines and want the rigging simplicity that the steerable gearcase provides.

If you are somewhere in the middle, the right answer depends on your specific hull, your typical load, and how you use the boat. That is exactly the kind of conversation worth having with a certified Mercury dealer before you commit.
